SJAA Youth Safety Policy & Coaching Standards

The Coaches Honor.

Every St. Johns Athletic Association coach signs the Coaches Honor and confirms receipt of the SJAA Youth Safety Policy before stepping onto the practice field. One consistent, enforceable standard for child protection and character development.

Section 3 · Youth Safety Policy

Two-Adult Rule & Full Screening

At least two background-screened adults are present at every team activity. Coaches are never alone with an athlete out of sight of another adult, and never drive a player alone.

Section 3 & 9 · Mandatory Reporting

Florida Abuse Hotline First

Suspected abuse or neglect is reported immediately to the Florida Abuse Hotline (1-800-96-ABUSE) or 911 first, then SJAA. Any accused coach is immediately removed from athlete contact.

Section 5 · Safe Communications

Parent-Included Team Channels Only

Coaches communicate with athletes only through official team channels that include parents—never via private texts, DMs, or social media.

Section 6 · All SJAA Events

100% Substance-Free Activities

Alcohol, tobacco, vaping products, marijuana, and illegal drugs are strictly prohibited at any SJAA practice, game, team party, or event.

ST. JOHNS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

THE COACHES HONOR

As a coach of the St. Johns Athletic Association, I understand that coaching youth football and sideline cheer is more than teaching a sport. I am entrusted with the development, safety, confidence, character, and well-being of young athletes.

I accept the responsibility to represent this association, my team, my community, and most importantly, the children I coach with honor, integrity, discipline, and respect. I understand that my actions, both on and off the field, can have a lasting impact on the young athletes who look up to me.

The Coach’s Pledge

I coach because I believe in the power of youth sports to build character, confidence, discipline, teamwork, and lifelong relationships.

I will remember that the children on my team may not remember every game we won, every play we called, or every championship we played for. They will remember how I treated them.

I will strive to make every player better, not only as a football player or cheerleader, but as a teammate, student, leader, and person.

I will protect their safety. I will teach them the fundamentals. I will challenge them to work hard. I will hold them accountable. I will encourage them when they struggle. I will celebrate their growth. I will respect the game. I will respect the officials. I will respect the families. I will respect the community. And above all, I will honor the responsibility of being a coach.

Coach’s Mandatory Acknowledgment

“I have read and understand the St. Johns Athletic Association Coaches Honor, and I have received the SJAA Youth Safety Policy. I agree to follow these standards and understand that my position as a coach is a privilege and a responsibility.”

Any violation of this policy may result in immediate removal from coaching activities, suspension, dismissal, and/or referral to appropriate authorities when required by law or association policy.

I understand that I am accountable for my actions and decisions as a coach. If I witness conduct that violates this Coaches Honor, I will report the concern through the appropriate St. Johns Athletic Association leadership channel. Suspected abuse is always reported to authorities first, as described in Section 3. Violations are handled by the Director of Coaching, with any appeal going to the SJAA Board. Violations may result in:
